2004: Champions Tour - Summerhays ends 6-year dry spell
Tuesday, October 4, 2011
It took six years, but Bruce Summerhays knew he would be back.
Summerhays, 60, last won on the Champions Tour at the 1998 State Farm Senior Classic.
Until Sept. 12, that is.
Summerhays overcame a six-shot deficit Sunday with a final-round 64 to finish at 15-under 201, topping Doug Tewell (71), defending champion Gil Morgan (66) and Jim Thorpe (66) by one shot at the Kroger Classic. Summerhays won $225,000 to move to No. 26 in earnings ($614,212).
“I never had any doubts that I would win again, but this tour is really competitive,” Summerhays said. “You have to shoot low, and when you get to be 60 years old, you wonder.”
