2004: Amateurs - Levin stays hot with 10-shot victory

Spencer Levin is on a roll, one that he hopes will continue through the U.S. Amateur Championship.

After being the low amateur at the U.S. Open and winning the California State Amateur in successive weeks, Levin, of Elk Grove, Calif., added to his already successful summer July 2 with a 10-stroke victory at the Scratch Players Championship at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.

Levin, a rising junior at New Mexico, shot 70-71-68-71 for an 8-under-par 280 total, 10 shots ahead of former University of California standout Peter Tomasulo, who finished at 2-over 290. Tomasulo, who helped lead the Bears to the 2004 national title, is ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Amateur Rankings.

“The way Spencer is playing is so good,” Tomasulo told the Monterey County Herald. “He’s been playing the best, and it showed.”

Casey Boyns and Keith Kinsel tied for third at 3-over 291.

Levin, who climbed to No. 24 in the rankings, plans to play in the Southern Amateur July 14-17, followed by the Porter Cup. He is scheduled to play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Aug. 3-6, followed by the Northern California Golf Association Amateur and then the U.S. Amateur, Aug. 16-22 at Winged Foot.

“I want that one bad,” Levin told the Herald, referring to the U.S. Amateur. “It’s going to be tough. But that would be special."
