Skipping a week sometimes does wonders to recharge the batteries, even after a victory. Just ask Charles Warren.

Two weeks after winning the Canadian PGA Championship, and one week after skipping the Wichita Open, Warren shot a final-round 6-under 66 Aug. 8 to capture the Cox Classic at Champions Run. Warren finished at 21-under 267, one shot better than John Elliott, who bogeyed the final hole.

He won $108,000 for his second triumph of 2004 and is No. 4 in Nationwide Tour earnings with $250,725. Warren also has wrapped up his PGA Tour card for 2005. The top-20 money winners earn status on the PGA Tour. In 1999, Warren played the Tour and made only eight cuts in 26 events (finishing No. 213 in money with $67,784).

“I’ve always dreamed of winning this one because it is one of our biggest tournaments,” said Warren, who moved up to No. 270 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index from No. 324. “I’ll always have fond memories of this win.”

By the way, Warren is playing this week’s event in Springfield, Mo.

Short shots: Jeff Hart holed a 3-wood from 229 yards in the third round for a double-eagle 2 at the 528-yard second. Hart had the first double eagle on a par 5 here since Joey Snyder and Joel Edwards made double eagles in 1999. Chip Beck aced the par-4 ninth hole last year. . . . There is talk that the Cox Classic could change to a Modified Stableford scoring system, which is used at The International on the PGA Tour. . . . Ricky Barnes missed the cut after shooting 75-73. . . . A record-tying 80 players made the cut at 4-under 140. Eighty players made the cut at the 2001 Boise Open.
