Fort Smith, Ark.
Chris Couch shot a final-round 60 to win the Nationwide Tour’s Rheem Classic May 15, but an even more important round might have been his even-par 70 the day before.
After beginning Saturday’s play at 4 under, five shots behind leader Camilo Villegas, Couch started with a double bogey and two bogeys, dropping nine shots behind Villegas. But he a took a deep breath, held it together and finished with five birdies and one bogey over the next 15 holes.
“I was very frustrated and the old me would have probably given up at that point,” said Couch. “I’ve been working really hard on my attitude to try and stay in the game and I did.”
Then he separated himself on Sunday, making 11 birdies and one bogey and shooting 30 on each side of the Hardscrabble Country Club layout. He capped his round with a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, finishing at 15-under 265.
