2005: PGA European - Rookie kicks in at KLM

Hilversum, Netherlands

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano saw an opening, and he slammed his way through.

The 24-year-old PGA European Tour rookie from Spain took advantage of a KLM Open field that was less than stellar to earn his first European Tour victory – following in the footsteps of idol Seve Ballesteros, who also won for the first time in the Netherlands. In fact, he bested Ballesteros in that he won in his 16th event. It took Ballesteros 27 tries.

“This win has come quickly, quicker than I thought,” Fernandez-Castano said. “Just a year ago I was not sure about turning professional.

“I was studying for my degree in business studies and playing amateur golf and I was not sure my game was good enough but at the end of last year I decided to give it a go.”
