2005: Nationwide Tour - Daley ends long journey to victory

Wichita, Kan.

It has been a long and sometimes painful road for Joe Daley.

A 4-foot birdie on the first playoff hole earned the 44-year-old Daley a victory over Shane Bertsch at the Wichita Open July 31. It was the first victory for Daley since the 1997 Louisiana Open.

“It has been a lot of years of hard work to get to this point again,” said Daley, who earned $85,500 and moved from No. 45 to No. 10 on the money list.

Daley (65) and Bertsch (65) finished at 16-under 268 at Crestview Country Club.

Two herniated discs were discovered in Daley’s neck in 2003. Surgery was ruled out when doctors discovered his blood was too thin to clot, resulting in a one-year hiatus from the tour. A lifestyle change focusing on exercise and proper diet eventually healed the injury.
