2005: Oklahoma’s Kim, coach not seeing eye to eye

Oklahoma’s Anthony Kim did not make the trip with the Sooners to the Nov. 4-6 Carpet Capital Collegiate in Georgia, and both Kim, Golfweek’s preseason No. 1 player, and Oklahoma coach Jim Ragan cited internal issues for the junior’s absence.

“We’ve been having our differences,” said Kim, who this summer was a semifinalist at the U.S. Amateur Public Links and a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Amateur.

“I just haven’t agreed on some things that have been going on and it’s been wearing on me. I just felt that it was in my best interest and the best interest of the team if I didn’t go.”

Rumors have circulated since Kim’s freshman year that he and Ragan didn’t get along, but both denied it this past spring.

“We still have a great relationship together,” Kim told Golfweek in April. “He’s always supported me and I believe in what he’s saying. I’ve always been his biggest supporter.”

But last weekend, Kim remained at school in Norman, Okla., where he said he was “doing a lot of thinking” about his situation.

Said Ragan: “There’s a couple of internal issues we’re working through, but I’d rather not get into specific things. But I think he’s fine and will be back in the swing of things before too long. We’ll just regroup and try to turn it on for the spring.”

Kim and Ragan exchanged words following Oklahoma’s only other tournament this fall, the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate in mid-October.

There may have been some frustration involved as the Sooners finished 13th and shot a closing round 10-over 298, the second-highest round among the 15 teams. Kim had a final-round 75 and tied for 20th.

“I don’t think anyone was very happy (after the ETSU tournament) and some emotions came out,” Kim said. “I think this is still a carryover from that.”

As far as his future at Oklahoma and in college golf, he said: “I’m just going to have to think about it.”

Without Kim, the Sooners finished last among 18 teams at the Carpet Capital with a 46-over-par 910 total.
