2006: Cipriano Castro, second-round 59, Venezuela Open

The Venezuelan became the first Latin American player to shoot golf’s magic number (59), sinking a 5-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole for his 11th birdie of the day in the Tour de las Americas’ Venezuelan Open held at the par-70, 6,372-yard Valle Arriba Golf Club in Caracas.

After starting the day alone in second place after a first-round 65, Castro’s round gave him a seven-stroke lead through 36 holes.

His record-breaking act began with birdies on his first five holes. After parring holes 6 and 7, he went on to birdie Nos. 8 and 9 to shoot 7-under 28 on the front nine.

“I didn’t think of any records at that point,” said the 31-year-old Castro, a Caracas native. “I was completely focused on finding a good spot on the green in order to sink the putts. The score just came to me.”

After another birdie on No. 10, Castro cooled off with four consecutive pars before finishing birdie-par-birdie-birdie. Any realistic chance he had of a 58 ended at the par-5 16th, which he three-putted for par. Despite that three-putt, Castro needed only 25 putts in his 11-under round.

He became the second player in two weeks to record a 59 in a professional event, following Adrien Mork’s 12-under 59 recorded May 26 at the European Challenge Tour’s Moroccan Classic.

Unfortunately, the local favorite’s magic didn’t last in the final two rounds (72-72). Castro still held a six-shot lead late in Round 3 before making a double bogey and bogey on Nos. 17 and 18 to cut his lead to three, then started bogey-bogey in the final round to fall out of the top spot. He tied for third at 12-under 268.
