Stetson shocks Campbell to win A-Sun
The Stetson women’s golf team shot a school and tournament-record round of even-par 288 on Wednesday to rally from a three-stroke deficit to defeat Campbell and win the school’s first Atlantic Sun title.
The Hatters finished at 17-over 881 for the 54-hole tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Fla., two strokes ahead of the Lady Camels. Junior Danielle Jackson shot a final-round, record-tying 3-under 69, finishing with a 3-under 213 total to become the first Hatter ever to win individual medalist honors. Freshman teammate Lauren Cate finished two shots back at 1-under 215.
“When I came here four years ago, this was one of my goals, to get this program to this place,” said head coach Floyd Kerr. “Our kids played a tremendous tournament. It’s especially great that Danielle Jackson and Lauren Darnell, who were in my first recruiting class, got to lead this victory.”
With the victory, Stetson, ranked No. 93 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, earned the A-Sun Conference’s automatic bid to NCAA regional play - the school’s first trip to the postseason.
East Tennessee State and Campbell were the favorites and now will have to wait and see if an at-large bid will come.
