Meet Fletcher Johnson, everybody
TULSA, Okla. – There were at least a half-dozen college coaches following U.S. Junior champ Jordan Spieth at the U.S. Amateur on Tuesday. It didn’t take long for the coaches to be impressed by another high-school junior in the group.
Fletcher Johnson, of Tupelo, Miss., shot 73 Tuesday at Southern Hills Country Club, two strokes better than Spieth. Johnson’s 10-over 150 total likely will leave him a couple shots outside the cut line, but made a good impression on the coaches from schools like Georgia, UCLA, USC, Texas A&M and Stanford.
“It was pretty cool,” Johnson said about the coaches in his gallery. “I was kind of nervous at first, but I kind of got over it and played my game.”
Johnson won the 2008 Mississippi State Junior and lost a playoff a month ago at the AJGA’s Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championship.
