Lefties to lock horns at U.S. Am

TULSA, Okla. – When we get to the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur, there are occasionally some coincidental match-ups. Sometimes we see teammates versus teammates, family members versus family members, or even a couple senior amateurs taking each other on.

Here’s another random one.

In the second round Thursday, 16-year-old left-hander Cameron Wilson will take on fellow lefty Phillip Mollica. This will be the second time this year that Wilson will face a fellow lefty at a USGA event. Earlier this summer, Wilson lost to Logan Harrell in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior.

Just a few weeks ago Wilson won the MET Amateur and is headed to Stanford in 2010. His mother, Myra, used to work at Sports Illustrated. Wouldn’t that be interesting if after playing a fellow lefty in round two, he faced Mike Van Sickle (whose father, Gary, currently works for SI and is caddying for his son this week) down the road. Wonder if his mom would want to caddie to catch up about office fodder?
