NCAA champ turns U.S. Amateur caddie

TULSA, Okla. – Matt Hill may not have made it to the match play portion of this year’s U.S. Amateur as a player, but he is still here as a caddie. He is now on the bag for N.C. State teammate Brad Revell.

“He’s a real solid ball striker and can surprise a lot of people, I’m feeling it,” the 2009 NCAA individual champion said.

After NCAAs, I asked Matt if he was disappointed at all not playing in “premier” amateur events like several of his collegiate competitors. He said no, for good reason.

“This summer you can say I was taking it all in. I got to play the AT&T, Canadian Open, Buick, all PGA tour events.” Hill was bursting with excitement talking about it.

Things may have been different if Hill weren’t Canadian. I can’t tell you how many times this week I have heard Americans wishing he could play on the U.S. Walker Cup team.

“I would love to be able to play in that,” Hill said. “But it is what it is.”
