Matches grind on at U.S. Am

TULSA, Okla. – Mike Van Sickle is rolling at the U.S. Amateur. Van Sickle beat Trent Whitekiller, 6 and 5, in Thursday’s second round to eliminate the only remaining Oklahoman.

Van Sickle won his first-round match over Cal’s John Murphy, 6 and 4. Van Sickle has played 27 holes in two matches.

“Everything seems to be clicking,” he said.

The dominant storyline this week has been the chase for the final two spots on the U.S. Walker Cup team. The other contenders also played well Thursday.

Dan Woltman beat Auburn’s Glenn Northcutt, 7 and 5. It was the largest winning margin thus far in match play.

Peter Uihlein beat UCLA’s Connor Driscoll, 2 and 1. Cameron Tringale beat Bronson Burgoon, 1 up, and Mark Anderson beat Illinois’ Zach Barlow, 1 up.

The U.S. Walker Cup team is done after Bud Cauley’s 2-and-1 loss to Arkansas’ David Lingmerth. Nico Geyger, who graduated from the University of Tulsa earlier this year, advanced after a 3-and-2 victory over Texas Tech’s Matt Smith.

Two high-schoolers also advanced to the third round – 16-year-old Marcel Puyat and Byeong-Hun An. An, a high-school senior, has made a verbal commitment to Cal.

There will be 11 Americans in the final 16.
