Ask the expert: Bob Vokey

Bob Vokey has been designing clubs since the early 1970s and has been making wedges for Titleist for 12 years. He says he has the best R&D department in the world: the PGA Tour.

Golfweek: What’s the best advice you could give an amateur player on wedges?

Bob Vokey: Weekend golfers do not have enough bounce. Bounce is your friend. Bounce is the rudder on the ship. It allows you to skid, stops you from digging, helps you to glide and get through the sand and turf. And know the right bounce for the particular conditions at your course.

GW: Do pros change out their wedges frequently?

BV: A lot of young guys want to change their wedges every month, and I tell them that wedges are like an old pair of shoes. The more you wear an old pair of shoes the more it sets into your foot and gets comfortable. Wedges are the same thing.

The more you swing, it wears to your particular ‘swingprint’ and the more you wear it, the better off it is. Don’t get hung up on spin. Spin is OK for a certain amount of shots; there’s other shots that don’t even need the spin.

GW: Should an average player even carry a 60-degree wedge?

BV: Not if he doesn’t have the ability to practice his technique. Nothing good happens when the average weekend golfer – I’m talking 15 to 20 or above handicapper – goes out (with a 60) and starts laying it open and he doesn’t have that slow, syrupy swing. If I had to recommend, I like more of a 58 (degree) combination – say 54-58 or 53-58 combination for the weekend golfer.
