Adam Scott? Really?

LEMONT, Ill. – In making Presidents Cup captains’ picks Tuesday, Fred Couples chose Lucas Glover and Hunter Mahan as expected for the United States team, and Greg Norman took Ryo Ishikawa and, surprisingly, Adam Scott for the Internationals.

Here’s a quick take from the captains on their selections for the Oct. 8-11 matches at Harding Park in San Francisco:

• Couples on picking Glover and Mahan: “No brainer.”

• Norman on taking Ishikawa, 17: “No brainer.”

• Norman on selecting Scott: “Logical choice.”

Three out of four aren’t bad.

Cynics could call the Scott nod a “no brain” choice.

The competition may prove Scott to be the best pick in the history of international match play; he certainly has the talent. But his inclusion was nothing but surprising, given his long slump. Even Scott reacted to the pick as “somewhat unexpected” and his 2009 as a “tough year.”

In 16 starts since January, Scott has missed 10 cuts, never finished better than T-33 and shot just three rounds in the 60s. He ranks 110th in FedEx Cup points. In other words, he has a month to find it.

Norman, of course, is hoping the 29-year-old Australian will wake up the echoes and unleash the talent that got him to No. 3 in the world as of June 2008. He cited experience and camaraderie as two reasons for the pick.

In matters like these, I like to defer to John Wooden, who once said, “I’ll take talent over experience every time.”
