Blumenherst passed over for exemption
Monday, September 28, 2009
Amanda Blumenherst picked up a nice check yesterday in Danville, Calif. Too bad her T-5 showing doesn’t secure a spot in this week’s Navistar LPGA Classic.
The PGA Tour gives non-members who post a top-10 finish the chance to play in the next full-field event. The Nationwide Tour extends the opportunity to those who finish in the top 25.
Before Michelle Wie became an LPGA member, it looked like the women might adopt a similar rule to give Wiesy more chances to play. Unfortunately for Blumenherst, they never made that change.
Blumenherst tried to get a sponsor exemption for this week’s event but was denied. Instead, Arizona State freshman Jennifer Johnson and Kim Welch got the nod.
Johnson makes sense. She had a stellar summer, finishing runner-up at the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Both Welch and Blumenherst played the CVS last week on sponsor exemptions. Welch, a former Big Break winner, missed the cut last year in Prattville. Not quite sure how she beat out Blumenherst this week in the exemption race.
Looking at resumes, there’s no contest.
