UNC Wilmington won its first event since 2008, hanging on for a five-shot victory Tuesday at the VCU Shootout.
The Seahawks, who began the final round with a nine-shot lead, closed with a 13-over 301 to finish at 8-over 872 at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Virginia (296) was second at 877 and Wake Forest (299) was third at 879.
UNCW’s last victory came at the Cuthbert Cup, a rain-shorted 36-hole event in February 2008. Its last 54-hole title came at the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
The Seahawks were led by senior Derek Wallace, who finished third at even-par 216, and sophomore Taylor Zimmerman, who tied for fourth at 1-over 217. It was Wallace’s third top-10 finish of the season.
Charlotte senior Corey Nagy claimed medalist honors with rounds of 69-71-70 to finish at 6-under 210. It was his third college title and followed his victory at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship.
Wake Forest senior Brendan Gielow, who this summer won the Porter Cup and was on the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team earlier this month, finished runner-up at 4-under 212.
