AUGUSTA, Ga. – There were two things that made me do a double-take on Thursday.

The first was Scott Verplank hitting out of turn at the par-3 12th.

The honor at that hole actually belonged to amateur Brad Benjamin, thanks to his birdie at the 10th. But after Benjamin, Verplank and Bernhard Langer finished the 11th, Verplank mistakenly teed his ball and played first at the 12th. (There is no penalty for playing out of turn in stroke play.)

Perhaps if Verplank had another minute to think about his play, he might have fared better. As it was, his ball barely cleared the hazard but rolled back into the water. After a drop, Verplank hit a nice pitch to about 8 feet but missed the putt for bogey.

The second double-take was seeing former Masters champ Ian Woosnam pass on lunch at Augusta National and instead head to a burger joint just down on Washington Road. Kudos to the crew at Five Guys for recognizing Woosnam and his party, and if the worker I spoke to was correct that the place comped his order, that was an appropriately nice gesture, too.
