Duncan collects big win at Dixie Amateur
Monday, January 4, 2010
A Duke freshman outlasted the field at the Dixie Amateur Sunday, recording the only sub-par total at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla.
Lindy Duncan won the tournament by five shots, edging some of the top college, amateur and junior players in the country. A resident of Davie, Fla., Duncan carded a 4-under 284 (70-71-70-73) to stay clear of second-place finishers Alexis Thompson and Holly Clyburn, who finished at 1-over 289. Thompson, the top-ranked girl in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, entered the tournament after winning the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship last week. Thompson also won the Dixie Amateur in 2007 as a 12-year-old.
Duncan’s final two rounds were enough to propel her to the lead and overtake Thompson, who had held the top spot for the first two rounds. Duncan is ranked No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, and led Duke in scoring average during the fall season, recording one top-10 finish and four top-20 finishes. Before joining Duke, Duncan played in the 2008 LPGA Ginn Open, played in two U.S. Women’s Amateurs and made four U.S. Girls’ Junior appearances.
Rounding out the top 5 were Auburn senior Candace Schepperle and Nova Southeastern junior Sandra Changkija at 3-over 291. Schepperle won the 2008 Dixie Amateur.
Vanderbilt sophomore Marina Alex, No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished T-6 another shot back with Laura Blanco, of Colombia, and Suzie Lee, who has committed to South Carolina for next fall.
