Look your best in 2010
Tuesday, January 5, 2010
As the New Year rings in, so must a list of new fashion trends for the year ahead, right? Not necessarily. Fashion trends are important to keep track of but nothing is less fashionable than trying to jump on every trend that hits the market. What’s important is to know your own style and be sure to choose items and trends that will fit into your wardrobe instead. Nothing is worse than struggling to build a new look around one trendy piece or piling on all the trends in hopes of looking good.
Another thing to remember: If someone says orange is the new black – they’re wrong! Statements like these are strategic sales and marketing efforts. Basics like white and black will never go out of style. It’s the same with items in your wardrobe. If someone tells you, “Vests are so last season,” ignore them. Vests, polos and sweaters will never completely go out of style; they will reinvent themselves. Take jeans, for example. During the disco-decade, bell bottoms were the funky style. Acid-washed raged in 80s. Hip-hop-inspired baggy jeans kicked off the 90s and finished off with the new reinvented bellbottom, the flared jean. Though the image of these items changed, the core still remained throughout time.
There’s no need to panic. Unless, of course, you’re still wearing jeans from any of the aforementioned.
Fun things to try in 2010:
Shapes, stripes and patterns – As usual geometrical shapes, interesting designs and bold patterns are showing up in 2010 collections. From argyle to stripes, we are seeing striking new ways to use these designs. It’s a futuristic twist to many staple patterns. Look for polos with designs located in unique locations (i.e. upper-left chest and shoulder) and reinvented patterns with that ultramodern edge.
Color – With lifestyle brands and collections emerging we’ve seen a lot of safe shades and color usage. However, get ready for some bold new additions in 2010. We’ll be seeing shirts, shoes and belts with animal inspired prints, lipstick hot pinks and reds, metallic detailing and paisley prints. Don’t be afraid to spice up your head-to-toe black ensemble with a brightly-colored belt or some funky-patterned shoes. This is the year to be bold in all the right places.
The fitted pant – I’m not implying that everyone sport pants as fitted as Jesper Parnevik – although, he wears his well – but it’s okay to have your pant be a little more form fitted. If big, baggy or flowing describes how the pants in your closet look, you’re slowly falling behind. To avoid looking sloppy and outdated, try a pant with blended fabrics. Look for a small percent (2-6%) to be made from spandex, elastane or lycra which allows for movement and stretch. This new style of pant is freeing enough to bend down and read a putt and you’ll have no problem picking your ball out of the hole.
Bottom line with trends for 2010… it’s a new decade! Enjoy trying out some new looks and combine them with things you already have in your closet. Remember to start out slow. If drawing attention to yourself in a fashionable way is not your thing, get a new slimming pair of khakis or a new polo with some chic form of argyle. Trends don’t happen over night, but be open-minded to change and you won’t get stuck in any fashion ruts.
