Allenby sprains ankle prior to Sony Open
HONOLULU – Robert Allenby stepped awkwardly on a curb just before the Monday pro-am at the Sony Open and severely sprained his right ankle.
“I never played in a Monday pro-am before and now this,” said Allenby, who received treatment on Tuesday. “It’s killing me. I’ve worked my butt off to get ready for the season. I guess that’s golf.”
Allenby did not hit balls Tuesday and was unsure if his ankle would allow him to play in the Wednesday pro-am. However, he was fairly certain he would play on Thursday.
“I’ve sprained my ankle before and I just need to hang back a little because you fear rolling the ankle,” Allenby said.
According to the Sony Open medical staff, Allenby can not do any further damage to the ankle, but will require taping and possibly a brace to play in Round 1.
