Veterans vying for Northern Trust spot
Sunday, January 31, 2010
Want to poll the players at this week’s Northern Trust Open for their favorite memories of the tournament’s new executive director, the legendary Jerry West?
Well, your best bet might be the Monday qualifier in Industry Hills, Calif.
The entry list includes at least six players whose history at this annual PGA Tour stop dates back to the 1980s, even to a time when Glen Campbell’s name was attached to it.
Signed up for the qualifier are Bobby Clampett and one Phillip Mac O’Grady, both of whom played their first Riviera in ’81. Tom Pernice and Steve Pate made their Riviera debuts in ’86, Curt Byrum in ’87, and Tommy Armour III in ’88.
All have committed to the Monday qualifier, which we will take as the ultimate compliment to the proud and time-proven Riviera.
