Whan has everyone’s attention

CARLSBAD, Calif. – If there’s an overriding theme of Mike Whan’s stint as LPGA commissioner thus far, it’s transparency - at least from the players’ perspective.

Whan ran his first players’ meeting Tuesday evening, and he wanted to make sure every player understood every word. Four interpreters were in place – Korean, Mandarin, Japanese and Spanish – to help get his “90 Days” message across. The interpreters definitely had the toughest job in the room. Whan talks as fast as his nickname, “Flash,” suggests.

Whan told players they were going to have a “locker-room mentality.” In other words, talk to each other like they’re on the same team.

Brutal honesty.

Those present at the meeting say there wasn’t a lot of background chatter while Whan talked; he had them hooked.

“I appreciate the brutal honesty,” tour veteran Moira Dunn said. “Whether it’s good news or bad news, he doesn’t beat around the bush.”

When Whan was asked how he’d describe the tour these days, he said “re-emerging.” They’re in the business of renewals, and he’s reaching out to all the partners who parted ways in the past several years.

“We’re tied to the business partners we’re with,” he said. “If they’re hurting, we’re hurting. Quite frankly, one of the things I think we learned in 2008 and ’09 is to really respect that.”
