Shin overtakes Ochoa as World No. 1

MORELIA, Mexico – Jiyai Shin shot 66 on Sunday in Japan to win the Cyber Agent Ladies Golf Tournament by two strokes.

She became the No. 1 player in the world Monday when the Rolex World Rankings were released.

Lorena Ochoa, who was playing in her final event as an active member of the LPGA on Sunday, needed to finish fourth or better in her native Mexico to retire as World No. 1.

She shot 71 and finished sixth, two shots back of fourth place. Her round included five birdies and three bogeys on three par-5s.

Shin, ranked No. 2, trumped even Ai Miyazato, who won the Tres Marias Championship. That’s why Koreans call Shin the “Final-round Queen.”

Ochoa said after the round that in her mind she finished her career at No. 1. She also said she didn’t know what she needed to do to beat Shin.

"Maybe they should have told me," Ochoa said.
