UC Irvine cruised to a 17-shot victory Tuesday at the Big West Championship, the Anteaters’ sixth conference title since 2001.

UC Irvine, No. 56 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, posted a three-round total of 9-over 873 at Mission Viejo (Calif.) Country Club. Pacific was a distant second at 26-over 890, and Long Beach State was third at 895.

UC Irvine senior John Chin, No. 9 in Golfweek’s rankings, earned medalist honors after closing with a 1-under 71 for a nine-shot victory over Pacific’s T.J. Bordeaux (73) and Cal Poly’s Pace Johnson (76). Chin, who won this event in 2008, finished at 7-under 209. He was the only player to finish under par for the tournament.

UC Irvine earned an automatic berth into the NCAA regionals by virtue of its victory at the Big West Championship. It is the Anteaters’ ninth trip to the postseason in the past 10 years.
