Whan to address LPGA’s ‘female at birth’ policy

LPGA commissioner Mike Whan will address the tour’s “female at birth” policy Nov. 30 at a membership meeting in Orlando, Fla. Then, players will vote on whether to change the tour’s constitution.

The LPGA’s gender requirements were brought into question by Lana Lawless, a 57-year-old who had gender-reassignment surgery five years ago. Lawless sued the tour, and Whan has spent the past several weeks learning about transgendered athletes.

“The ball is in our court in terms of how we want to respond,” Whan said.

To change the constitution, three-fourths of members eligible to vote must approve. The vote will take place during the LPGA Tour Championship at Grand Cypress.
