Toy Box Notes: Tiger’s club tweaks
Sunday, May 12, 2013
Tiger Woods picked up his first victory in two years at the Chevron World Challenge using Nike equipment exclusively.
His bag: VR Tour driver (8.5 degree), VR Pro Limited Edition 3-wood (15 degree), VR Pro 5-wood (19 degree), VR Pro Blades (3-PW), VR Pro wedges (56 and 60 degree), Method 001 putter and One Tour D ball.
At the Australian Open, Woods removed the 5-wood from his bag and substituted a VRS forged 3-iron bent to 2-iron loft. The VRS strong-lofted 3-iron has become the club of choice for Woods’ “stinger” iron shot. Nike’s new VRS irons, which are cavity-back forgings, will be available in February.
The driver shaft used by Woods is still the Graphite Design Tour AD DI-6X, which weighs 68 grams.
How long is his driver? Nike won’t say, but insiders report the length is 45.25 inches, up one-half inch from the 44.75 he used most of last year. By contrast, when Woods won his final U.S. Amateur in 1996, he used a 43.5-inch Cobra driver with a 130-gram steel shaft.
