Friday, December 23, 2011
Cody Proveaux holed a 7-foot birdie putt Dec. 22 to defeat Adrian Meronk in sudden death and win the Gate American Junior.
Proveaux, No. 5 in Golfweek’s Junior Rankings, and Meronk finished regulation at 5-under 211 at Pontre Vedra Golf and Inn’s Ocean Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. On the third hole of sudden death, a 570-yard par 5, Meronk, of Poland, stuck his approach to 15 feet then watched Proveaux put it 8 feet inside of him and make the putt to win.
Proveaux was named the Rolex Player of the Year after a 2011 season during which he finished runner-up at three AJGA Invitationals: the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, the Footjoy Invitational and the Rolex Tournament of Champions. He will join the Clemson roster in the fall.
In the girls’ division, Austria’s Marina Stuetz shot 2-over 218 to finish two shots ahead of Nicole Broch Larsen. Megan Khang, 14, finished 13 shots back in a tie for seventh to secure top American honors.
