Arizona State wins 1st title of season in Hawaii
Tuesday, March 15, 2011
In only its fourth start as a team in the 2010-11 season, Arizona State took home the title at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Tuesday in O’ahu, Hawaii. The Sun Devils finished 15 shots ahead of fellow Pac-10 team Arizona.
After competing as individuals in the fall season, head coach Melissa Luellen filled out the roster during the winter months, and Arizona State has steadily been climbing the rankings. The team earned two top-3 finishes in its four previous full-field starts this spring, and is ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. The Sun Devils posted a 23-over 887 for the week at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
Arizona State claimed three golfers in the top 10, including individual champion Carlota Ciganda. It’s the second title for Ciganda this season. She was at 1-under 215, one shot ahead of Arizona’s Alejandra Llaneza. Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho was third at 3-over 219.
Notre Dame finished third in the team competition at 4-over 904. UNLV was another four shots back, and Nevada rounded out the top five at 54-over 918.
