Echavarria (No. 5, 2012) commits to Arkansas

Nicolas Echavarria, the fifth-ranked player in the 2012 class, has given a verbal commitment to play college golf at Arkansas. Echavarria said he also considered Auburn, North Carolina, Arizona State and Florida, where his brother, Andres, was an All-American.

“I decided on Arkansas because of its great program and also their three victories this year,” Echavarria said in an email. “Also, they have great coaches at Arkansas and a perfect golf course (Blessings).”

Echavarria had a breakout season in 2011, with four top-12 finishes in national events, including a semifinal appearance at the U.S. Junior Amateur. He also tied for third at the Junior World Golf Championships, tied for seventh at the Junior Players and tied for 12th at the Ping Invitational.

Arkansas, which has won the Gopher Invitational, Golfweek Conference Challenge, Windon Memorial and Cabo Collegiate this fall, is No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
