Talbert (No. 13, 2013) commits to Clemson

McKenzie Talbert has become the first player to verbally commit to Clemson's women's program. Talbert, the top-ranked player in South Carolina, will join the team in the fall of 2013 for the first season of competition.

Talbert, of North Augusta, S.C., has been a Clemson fan her entire life. She still can remember the disappointment she felt when she found out as a 10-year-old that Clemson didn’t have a women’s golf team. She began to consider other schools, and took an unofficial visit to South Carolina. She had planned also to visit Auburn, Georgia and Alabama.

Talbert halted those plans when she heard that Clemson was adding a women’s golf program, and sat on her heels until former Tulane head coach J.T. Horton was put in charge of the program. She took an unofficial visit to Clemson on Sept. 1 and verbally committed on the spot.

“I didn’t need to be sold on Clemson because I already knew what I wanted. There’s not a thing about it that I don’t like,” Talbert said. “Obviously going up there and seeing everything that I hadn’t seen only made me more excited about my decision.”

One of the biggest draws for Talbert was the Clemson football team. She and her dad are fans, and she has been attending games since she was 4 years old.

“I just love the atmosphere; it’s a college town,” she said. “The stadium is unlike anything you could ever experience as far as football. It’s just the ultimate school for me.”

Talking to Talbert about the addition of a women’s team at Clemson is a lot like talking to head coach J.T. Horton. Both Southerners bleed orange for the Tigers.

“He loves the school as much as anyone,” Talbert said. “He knows what he’s doing, and he’s going to make it into a championship team.”

Talbert, a junior at Strom Thurmond High School, won back-to-back South Carolina 3A High School State Championships, and has collected five top-5 finishes in AJGA events in the past three years. She recently represented the U.S. at the Junior Solheim Cup, and won the 2011 Sea Pines Junior Heritage.
