Texas lassos Nicklaus title; Pieters medals

DUBLIN, Ohio – Texas won its second consecutive event, defeating host Ohio State by 16 shots Tuesday at the Nicklaus Invitational. The Longhorns finished at 2-under 862 at Muirfield Village Golf Club, annual site of the PGA Tour’s Memorial. Texas was coming off a 20-stroke victory a week earlier at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Four Longhorns finished in the top 9: Freshman Jordan Spieth (T-2), Dylan Fritelli (7), Julio Vega (8) and Toni Hakula (T-9). Spieth led the individual competition late in the final round before finishing bogey-bogey-double bogey, leaving him tied with Purdue’s Tyler Duncan at 5-under 211, two shots behind individual winner Thomas Pieters of Illinois at 7-under 209. Pieters had an up-and-down round, with eight birdies, eight bogeys and only two pars, but it was enough for his first college title. Pieters had finished runner-up to teammate Luke Guthrie on Oct. 2 at the D.A. Wiebring Intercollegiate.
Texas started the final round one stroke behind Ohio State, but shot 1-under 287, a final-round best, to the Buckeyes’ 304. Illinois (296) finished third at 20-over 884, followed by Kent State at 885 (310), UCLA at 886 (300) and Arkansas at 887 (297).
