Money ball: Simpson, Donald paired at Disney
Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Luke Donald should have no trouble figuring out how money leader Webb Simpson stands at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. They’ll be paired together for the first two rounds this week at Disney World, adding a bit of intrigue to the final full-field event of the season.
Simpson and Donald, Nos. 1 and 2 on the money list, respectively, tee off at 8:20 a.m. EDT Thursday on the 10th tee at the Palm Course (12:20 p.m. Friday on the Magnolia Course). Simpson, who lost in a playoff Sunday at the McGladrey Classic, leads World No. 1 Donald by $363,029.
Donald is playing the Disney event for the first time since 2003 in hopes of becoming the first player to win the PGA and European money titles in the same season. He needs to finish no worse than a two-way tie for second to top Simpson.
In another, more ruthless pairing, Bobby Gates and James Driscoll will play the first two rounds together. They are Nos. 124 and 125, respectively, in season earnings.
