Fowler, McIlroy to join Tiger on video game cover
Monday, October 24, 2011
After more than 250,000 votes were cast, Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy have been selected to join Tiger Woods on the cover of EA Sports' Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 video game. Fowler will grace the box art on the North American games and McIlroy will appear on European-released games.
For the first time in the game’s history, fans were invited to vote on which players they wanted to see on the cover through the game’s Facebook fan page. The three-week match-play style contest started with eight American players and eight Europeans, many of whom urged fans through their own Twitter and Facebook accounts to vote for them.
“For someone that grew up playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour and is a huge fan of the franchise, this is a great moment in my career,” Fowler said in a statement.
McIlroy also joined Woods on the cover of the 2011 game, which was released in advance of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
“Appearing on the cover of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 was an amazing experience and helped introduce me to a whole new fan base around the world,” said McIlroy. “But this year holds special meaning because it was the fans who decided to put me on the cover once again.”
In the final match, Rickie Fowler defeated Bubba Watson, earning 52 percent of the vote. McIlroy defeated World No. 1 Luke Donald on the European side, earning 54 percent of the vote.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 will is set to be released in March 2012.
