Kirby, Alabama sweep Liz Murphey titles
ATHENS, Ga. – Alabama’s Jennifer Kirby won her first college title, and teammates Stephanie Meadow and Brooke Pancake also finished in the top 6 on Sunday to lead the second-ranked Crimson Tide to a 12-shot victory over host Georgia at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
It is the third team title of the season for Alabama, which won its second consecutive Liz Murphey title with a tournament-record 10-under 854 total at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Tide broke the previous record – Georgia’s 4-under 860, set in 1999 – by six shots.
Kirby, a junior from Canada, shot rounds of 66-72-71 to finish with a 7-under 209 total, one shot ahead of Purdue’s Laura Gonzalez. Kirby had tied for first at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview earlier this season but lost in a playoff. Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow and Brooke Pancake tied for sixth Sunday at 3-under 213.
“I’m excited about Jennifer’s win and it was great to get both Stephanie and Brooke in the top 10," said Alabama head coach Mic Potter. "It was a great team win, and we have a few things to work on when we get back, so you can’t ask for anything more as a coach.”
Florida shot the lowest round of the day with a 5-under 283 and finished third at 3-over 867, one shot behind Georgia. Virginia (873) was fourth and South Carolina (875) fifth.
