Memphis claims Conference USA crown
TEXARKANA, Ark. - The Memphis men's golf team got a little revenge at the Conference USA Championship. The Tigers, No. 41 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, held off No. 22 Central Florida by two shots Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club, reversing the ending of last year's league championship, in which UCF defeated Memphis by two.
It was Memphis' first C-USA title in school history.
The Tigers shot even-par 288 in the final round and finished at 5-under 859 to hold off a final-day charge from the Knights, who had trailed Memphis by three after 36 holes but could only gain one shot on the Tigers after a final-round 287. No. 38 East Carolina, which also shot 1-under 287 Tuesday, finished third at 5-over 869.
UCF's Greg Eason won the individual title with an 8-under 208 (70-68-70), one shot ahead of Jack Belote of Memphis and Max Buckley of SMU.
Three other Memphis golfers joined Belote in the top 25: Jonathan Fly (T-5), Will Pearson (T-13) and Grant Milner (T-24).
