Asia-Pacific Amateur champ Tianlang Guan shot 82 Thursday in the first round of the Emirates Australian Open, his first professional stroke-play event since his historic victory.

Guan, 14, of China, won last month's Asia-Pacific Amateur to earn an invitation to the 2013 Masters, where he will be the youngest competitor in tournament history; Italy's Matteo Manassero, at age 16, competed in the 2010 Masters as the reigning British Amateur champion.

Guan's performance in professional events raises questions about how he might fare at Augusta National in April.

This is Guan's second start this year in a professional event that offers Official World Golf Ranking points. He shot 77-79 in the Volvo China Open, giving him a 79.3 scoring average in those three rounds. He was 13 when he competed in the China Open, setting the record for the youngest player to compete in a European Tour-sanctioned event.

Guan hit just six of 18 greens Thursday at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney and had 31 putts. He was 7 over par after eight holes. He had eight bogeys, one double bogey and no birdies. He is tied for 144th in the 156-player field.
