THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Shun Yat Hak solidified his standing as Golfweek’s top-ranked junior with a final-round comeback Monday to capture the AJGA’s HP Boys Championship.
Hak, who has given a verbal commitment to Georgia Tech for the fall of 2012, shot a final-round 69 to win the AJGA’s first invitational of the year by three shots. He finished with a three-day total of 3-under 213 at The Club at Carlton Woods.
Jonathan Garrick, Lee McCoy, David Lee, A.J. McInerney and Doug Ghim all tied for second at 216. Second-round leader Yi Keun Chang (76) was among the players who tied for seventh.
Hak, of Lake Mary, Fla., ascended to the top spot in the rankings after a stellar 2011 campaign. He won the AJGA Tournament of Champions and TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook, as well as a runner-up at the Ping Invitational. His triumph at the HP Boys was his fifth career AJGA title and second invitational.
Entering the final round three shots behind USC signee Chang, Hak double-bogeyed the par-5 second hole to fall off the pace, but rebounded with birdies on Nos. 3, 6, 7, 11 and 14.
