Blue Raiders go back-to-back in Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. – In a tight competition, Middle Tennessee State won the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate by one stroke over Memphis on Feb. 21 at the par-72 Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course. With rounds of 288-282-288 for a 6-under 858 total, the Blue Raiders not only defended their title at the tournament but also set a 54-hole tournament scoring record, beating the previous best of 863 (set by Middle Tennessee in 2011). The victory was the second of the season for MTSU, which also won the Mason Rudolph Championship in the fall.
Memphis finished at 5-under 859 (295-282-282), six shots ahead of third-place Wake Forest (1-over 865), followed closely by Illinois (866) and Vanderbilt (867).
Lee Bedford of Wake Forest and Alex Rowland of Mississippi State, both seniors, shared medalist honors at 4-under 212. Memphis teammates Jack Belote and Jonathan Fly tied for third at 3-under 213.
Middle Tennessee’s Andrew Cho was the top finisher for the Blue Raiders, tying for a career-best fifth at 2-under 214 with Illinois’ Thomas Pieters. MTSU senior Brad Simons tied for seventh at 215. All five Raiders finished in the top 30, including Brett Patterson and Paul Sansom (T-19) and senior Hunter Green (T-29).
“It was a team effort, and I am very proud of our guys for the toughness they displayed,” MTSU head coach Whit Turnbow said. “It’s a great way to get the spring started, but now we need to keep working to get better.”
