Fantasy Tip Sheet: Sony Open

Steve Stricker follows his drive from the third tee during the final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

This season, our panel of fantasy experts are all competing for a title. Each week, we'll keep track of the money won by each panelist's picks and the total will be added to over the course of the season.

In case you aren't familiar with our style, our experts pick one player inside the top 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, and then one "wild card," or a player outside the top 50.

This week's Sony Open has some intrigue, as a pair of our panelists think that Steve Stricker will open the season in perfect fashion, while a couple of others are thinking that Webb Simpson will grab the title in the first full-field event of the season.

Our picks for this week:

Rank Winner Wild Card Last Week
Rude Webb Simpson

Played well at Kapalua, still in top form, accustomed to Hawaii now and might be America's best player.

Jonathan Byrd

Played well at Kapalua, Hawaii seems to suit him.

Winner: Webb Simpson ($369,000); wild card: Jonathan Byrd ($369,000). 2012 total: $738,000

McCabe Webb Simpson

Simply playing consistently well, a virtual machine when it comes to getting in contention. Might as well stay with a hot player.

Vijay Singh

That's right, with all the young players moving in and all the fresh faces showing up at the Sony, here's a guess that the soon-to-be-49 Singh makes a splash in his season debut.

Winner: Nick Watney ($130,000); wild card: Keegan Bradley ($105,000). 2012 total: $235,000

Martin Steve Stricker

Hard to pick against Stricker here, though 2009 Sony champ Zach Johnson is also worth a look. Stricker has finished in the top four in three of his past five Sony appearances, and no worse than 23rd in that stretch.

Kevin Na

Na had a solid showing in his first appearance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions (T-5 through 54 holes) and has a good record at the Sony Open. He finished fourth there in 2008, fifth a year later and 20th last year.

Winner: Bubba Watson ($91,500); wild card: Bryce Molder ($190,000). 2012 total: $281,500

Miceli Steve Stricker

It is hard to get the Hawaiian double, the last time it happened was Ernie Els winning both Hyundai and Sony in 2003, but Stricker looked in control last week and with a swing of few moving parts, its hard for much to go wrong.

Davis Love III

The current Ryder Cup captain has a pretty good track record around Waialae Country Club. Love has seven top 10 finishes in 11 starts including a T-9 in 2001 and a T-5 in 2010 for recent form. Add to it that fact that Love has played at Sony 11 times, gives him more local knowledge than most of the locals.

Winner: Steve Stricker ($1,120,000); wild card: Keegan Bradley ($105,000). 2012 total: $1,225,000

Ringler K.J. Choi

Finished strong at Tournament of Champions with rounds of 69 and 65 in final two rounds. Despite missing the cut last year at Sony Open, Choi has good form at Waialae CC with a victory in 2008 and top 10s in in 2002 and 2007.

Mark Wilson

An average showing last week at T of C, but he is the defending champ and that accounts for something at the demanding Waialae CC layout.

Winner: Steve Stricker ($1,120,000); wild card: Mark Wilson ($91,500). 2012 total: $1,211,500
