Fantasy Tip Sheet: Humana Challenge

Bill Haas after winning the Tour Championship.

Will winning the FedEx Cup vault Bill Haas into the PGA Tour's elite group of players? A pair of our experts are banking on it.

Haas, who won the FedEx Cup with a dramatic win at the TOUR Championship in 2011, will make his season debut at the Humana Challenge on Thursday. He'll be joined by top-20 players Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell III and Zach Johnson. It will also feature Dustin Johnson, who is coming off an late-season injury.

The former Bob Hope Classic is now being run by the Clinton Foundation and it has moved from a 90-hole tournament to 72 holes and has attracted a much deeper field than in year's past.

A look at our staff picks for the Human Challenge:

Rank Winner Wild Card Last Week
Rude Bill Haas

The reigning FedEx Cup champion won the Humana (Bob Hope) in 2010 and lost in a playoff last year.

Brian Gay

Tied for sixth Sunday at the Sony Open. And has done well at the Humana venues, tying for fifth there last year.

Winner: Webb Simpson ($22,000); wild card: Jonathan Byrd ($0). 2012 total: $760,000

McCabe Spencer Levin

Quietly had a consistently solid end to his 2011 campaign, and 2012 started out nicely in Hawaii.

Anthony Kim

As a local who has only played this tournament twice – including a T-3 in 2008 – Kim has been the focal point of media queries. If he were to play very well, he'd probably ask himself why he hasn't played here more often.

Winner: Webb Simpson ($22,000); wild card: Vijay Singh ($14,709). 2012 total: $271,709

Martin Matt Kuchar

He was seventh here in 2011 and second here in 2010. I like that track record.

Brian Gay

He's coming off a sixth-place finish at the Sony Open. He works magic with a wedge in his hand. He was fifth here last year, his third consecutive top-20 at the Humana.

Winner: Steve Stricker ($22,000); wild card: Kevin Na ($0). 2012 total: $303,500

Miceli Phil Mickelson

Lefty is making his 2012 debut for the first time in the desert since 2007. It's a gamble to make the pick since it's unclear what Mickelson has done over the holiday since the Presidents Cup, but with two wins in 2002 & 2004 and two additional top 10s, take Mickelson and gamble.

Harrison Frazar

After a very successful trip to Hawaii, Frazar makes the trip to the desert. With three top 10s in 12 appearances, Frazar looks like a good bet.

Winner: Steve Stricker ($22,000); wild card: Davis Love III ($0). 2012 total: $1,247,000

Ringler Bill Haas

It's really hard to not select Haas. He is the 2010 champ and 2011 runner-up, which does not always mean much, but his form here is good. Five top 25s in seven showings at La Quinta.

David Hearn

Going back to last year, Hearn has posted four top 10s in his last six starts. Tied for 10th last week in Hawaii and his game should fair well at La Quinta.

Winner: K.J. Choi ($22,000); wild card: Mark Wilson ($0). 2012 total: $1,233,500
