A "Did You Know?" about every school from the Big West Conference:

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo: John Madden started his college football career at Oregon, but he finished it at Cal Poly, where he played offense and defense for the Mustangs.

Cal State Fullerton: The school's mascot is an elephant, which originated from the First Intercollegiate Elephant Race in Human History, which was hosted on campus during the 1960s. More than 10,000 spectators came to see the event, garnering worldwide coverage.

Cal State Northridge: Before becoming a Division I school, the Matadors were led by former PGA Tour player Bob Burns. In 1990, Burns won the NCAA Division II individual title before turning pro the next year.

Long Beach State: After spending 14 years as associate head coach at Arizona State, Mickey Yokoi will take over as the men's coach in the spring.

UC Davis: At the start of the year, U.S. News & World Report ranked UC Davis as the ninth-best public university in the U.S.

UC Irvine: The Anteaters won the NCAA Division II Championship in 1975, Irvine's Jerry Wisz was the individual medalist. In 2010, three-time Big West Player of the Year John Chin became the school's first NCAA Division I All-American.

UC Riverside: From 2002 to '05, Brendan Steele had his score count 129 times (95.6 percent), played in 138 rounds, won five tournaments and still holds the school scoring average record, at 72.27.

UC Santa Barbara: Senior Russell Boring had an impressive fall, with a 150-13-2 record. In both fall tournaments, Boring had top-10 finishes, including a fifth place to end the season at the Bill Cullum Invitational.

Pacific: The last time the Tigers won a conference title was the 1997 Big West.
