Phil Mickelson, who missed the cut in The Greenbrier Classic, will adjust his Open Championship preparations by playing in this week's Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, according to a report in today's Scotsman newspaper.

Mickelson traditionally played the Scottish Open as a tune-up for the next week's Open Championship. However, when Barclays, one of his main sponsors, ended title-sponsorship of the event after last year, Mickelson took the tournament off his schedule. However, after a 71-71 showing at Old White TPC in The Greenbrier, Mickelson sought an eleventh-hour sponsor exemption.

“We got a phone call last night from Phil’s management company saying he’d very much like to play at Castle Stuart,” Scottish Open tournament director Peter Adams told the Scotsman. “They asked if we had any invitations left, and we did. All the parties on the invitation committee were obviously unanimously in favor of Phil getting an invitation, and he is a terrific addition to the field.”

Mickelson, whose 40 PGA Tour victories include four major championships, won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am this year but has struggled recently. He withdrew from the Memorial after a first-round 79, citing fatigue, and faded to a tie for 65th before his 2-over 142 missed-cut effort at Greenbrier.

The Scottish Open begins Thursday at Castle Stuart. The Open Championship will be played July 19-22 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in England.
