Werenski takes four-shot lead behind 62 at Porter Cup
Georgia Tech junior Richy Werenski notched eight birdies in a bogey-free 62 Thursday to take a four-stroke lead at the Porter Cup. The South Hadley, Mass., native, parred his first three holes before posting birdies on five of the next six holes, including four consecutive on Nos. 6-9. He added birdies on Nos. 13, 15 and 16 to complete his 8-under round and put him at 12-under 128 halfway through the 72-hole event.
Werenski was especially good on the short holes, as he birdied three of the five par 3s at Niagara Falls Country Club.
Alabama sophomore Justin Thomas had a pretty good day himself, posting seven birdies, including four consecutive on Nos. 7-10, and no bogeys in a 7-under 63. He shares second place with Stanford sophomore Patrick Rodgers (65) and Florida senior Tyler McCumber (67) at 8-under 132.
Werenski's former Georgia Tech teammate, James White (65), is tied for fifth at 7 under, along with first-round leader Denny McCarthy (69) of Virginia and Corey Conners (67) of Kent State.
