Klava claims Cotton States crown

MONROE, La. -- Tyler Klava, a sophomore at South Alabama, held on for a 1-up victory over Jade Scott on July 28 in the 18-hole championship match of the W.E. Cole Cotton States Amateur Invitational.

Klava, of Pace, Fla., won holes 7-11 to take a 4-up lead, then held off Scott's late charge – the Texas A&M junior won holes 15-17 – by sinking a par putt from about 10 feet to halve the 18th hole and clinch the victory – his first since high school. He became the first Florida native to win the Cotton States title.

"I'm just glad I got that putt in," Klava told The (Monroe) News Star. "I did not want to go to a playoff because he would've had so much momentum. . . . It feels good now. I'm glad that it's over with."

In Saturday morning's semifinals, Klava edged Houston senior Will Dusenbury, 2 and 1, and Scott defeated LSU junior Landon Lyons, 4 and 2.
