Tom Simon, a former coach of the men’s and women’s teams at Michigan and the longtime club pro and manager at the University of Michigan Golf Course, died Saturday in Ann Arbor, according to a university news release. He was 83. A cause of death was not disclosed.

Simon was the first head coach for Michigan’s women and, upon taking over the men’s program in 1978, coached both teams until 1982. He had overseen the university’s golf course from 1969 until his retirement in 1988.

Simon learned the game as a caddie at Inverness Club in his native Toledo, Ohio, where a future Hall of Gamer, the late Byron Nelson, was the head pro at the time.

Simon was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Third Infantry Division in 1950-53.

A funeral Mass was scheduled for Wednesday morning in Ann Arbor.
