LSU's Thompson leads Western Amateur
Wednesday, August 1, 2012
Curtis Thompson, an LSU sophomore and older brother of LPGA star Lexi Thompson, fired a 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead over four others after the first round of the 110th Western Amateur Championship at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
Thompson posted four birdies in his opening six holes and had three birdies on the back-nine to erase two bogeys on a pair of par-3 holes.
Thompson is one shot clear of Alex Moon, Theodore Lederhausen, Matthew Stieger and Jace Long.
Jeffrey Kang, Abraham Ancer, Jordan Russell and Riley Pumphrey are all two shots back.
Peter Williamson, who has won twice this summer on the amateur circuit, is one of 11 players at 2 under.
