Down the stretch, the Bruin/Wave Invitational became a story of dueling co-hosts. Pepperdine held its lead Tuesday to finish two shots ahead of top-ranked UCLA and win its first title of the season.

The Waves built an 11-shot lead during the first two rounds at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., as UCLA sat in third. The Bruins quietly chipped away at that lead in the final round, shooting 14-over 302 to Pepperdine’s 315. Pepperdine’s 13-over 903 team total gave the Waves their first win of the season after top-3 finishes in their last three events, dating to the fall season.

Oklahoma State was third, and UNLV placed fourth.

UCLA still has not finished outside the top 2 in seven starts on the season. The Bruins competed with only four players at the Bruin/Wave as two players were suspended for breaking team rules.

San Diego State’s Christine Wong won the individual title at 3-over 219. Pepperdine’s Alina Ching was runner-up, four shots back.
