Atwal makes first cut of 2012 Tour season
PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Arjun Atwal hasn’t made a cut, hasn’t earned a dollar and has no FedEx Cup points to show for his seven appearances on the PGA Tour this season.
It has been a long season, and it’s only the third week of March.
So when the 2010 Wyndham champion knocked down a 6-footer for par, Atwal could breathe easier because he finally made a cut - on the number at 1 under in the Transitions Championship.
Coming into this week, Atwal had another disappointment that made him question if he should even make the trip to Innisbrook Golf Resort, just west of Tampa. Inside the cut line through 15 holes last week in Puerto Rico, Atwal bogeyed two of the last three holes and missed the cut by a shot.
“I never started a year on any Tour by missing every cut,” Atwal said. “Seven in row. So you start doubting yourself, and last week was really a big struggle for me after I missed by one. So I wasn’t going to play this week, but my wife's like, 'Playing in competition is how you know if you're getting better or not.' ”
So Atwal made the short trip from Orlando to Tampa and now will stay for the weekend and earn a check for the first time in 2012.
“I'm actually starting to putt well, and that's usually been my strong part,” Atwal said. “So I'm looking forward to just building on that, so it should be good.”
