Cal showed once again why it is the No. 1 team in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, winning its third consecutive start to begin the season.

The Golden Bears’ latest victory came Oct. 9 at the Pac-12 Preview at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club’s Witch Hollow Course in North Plains, Ore. The Bears shot 29-under 835 to finish seven shots ahead of No. 3 Washington, which was playing without World No. 1 amateur Chris Williams, who was at the World Amateur Team Championship. USC finished another shot back, while UCLA was a distant fourth at 9 under par.

Washington’s Trevor Simsby won the individual title with an 11-under 205 total (69-70-66), beating Arizona State’s Jon Rahm by one shot. Rahm closed with 64-65 after an opening 77.

Cal, the defending Pac-12 champions, started this season by winning the Gopher Invitational, then sharing the Ping-Golfweek Preview title with host Georgia Tech.

Michael Kim shot 6-under 210 to lead Cal with a sixth-place finish. Joel Stalter also finished in the top-10 for the Bears, shooting a final-round 67 to tie for eighth at 5-under 211.

This was Simsby’s second top-three finish in three starts this season. He also was runner-up at the Husky Invitational.
